Small Entryways: The Many Challenges
I know I’m not the only one longing for an entryway that has all the space and storage I could ever need. Having a small entryway poses unique challenges, and sometimes requires thinking outside the box to make it functional.
Having a small entryway presents storage issues, especially if there is not a jacket closet. This makes the area look cluttered and messy. On top of this, finding the right sized items to solve these problems is no easy feat, since most entryway furniture is meant for larger spaces. Finding items that fit your style, budget and space is time-consuming, and there is always something you wish you would have done differently. Keeping a neat appearance in a small entryway is a challenge in itself, and can take trial and error to figure out a good system. Having a small entryway is not ideal, however there are ways to solve these main problems. This post will give you 5 solid elements you need to overcome these challenges! These small entryway ideas and needed elements will give you some direction when arranging your entryway.
The 5 Elements
In order to have a functional AND cute small entryway, you will need 5 elements. These elements will give you function, storage and seating, along with a little splash of decor.
1. Slim Rug
Before you judge my dirty rug, let me just say it is mud season here in New England. It’s impossible to keep my entryway free of salt and rocks. I’ve accepted it, let’s move on.
Having a small entryway means finding a small rug. You don’t want the rug to take up too much space outside of the entryway, but you want it to be large enough to allow you enough room when you walk in the door. Every small entryway is configured differently, so you’ll need to determine what dimensions would work for your space.
Getting a color that blends into your flooring will look the best, and will create a more cohesive look with the other elements in your home.
2. Small Bench With Storage
A MUST in a small entryway.
A lot of benches/wall trees are made for larger spaces, but there are some great smaller options if you take the time to look! Finding a bench that has 2 tiers, built-in drawers, or a storage compartment is essential in a space with restricted storage. Having storage within your bench provides a ton of extra room without having to take up more floor space. Not only does it provide more storage, but it helps neaten up your entryway, and gives the illusion that everything has a place. Small benches are usually reasonably priced, which is one perk of having a small entryway!
Not only will a bench give you storage, but it will give you a place to sit down and put your shoes on. This is definitely not a necessity, but is nice to have!
3. Wall Hooks
Wall hooks provide storage without crowding up floor space. Hooks are convenient for hanging coats, purses, and keys! Even small hooks can hold a lot of things. Depending on the amount of wall space you have available, they make more extensive ones with mail holders and shelves. This can be a great spot to store all those random items that always end up in the entryway!
4. Baskets
The perfect solution for storing your address book, stamps, chargers, sunglasses, and any other small things that get dropped in our entryway. Baskets organize these things and give them a home, giving the appearance that everything is neat! If you have room for a larger basket on the floor, that’s even better! If not, a small one on the bench works just as well.
As you can see, my garden seeds ended up in my entryway basket recently. It’s so nice to have a home for things that would otherwise be hanging around where they really don’t belong!
5. Decor
The best part! Although adding function is the main priority in any small entryway, adding some decor items will pull it all together, and will give you that “welcome home” feeling when you step through the door. If your entryway is in your main living space, you’ll want to incorporate it into the rest of your home with decor that compliments the rest of your house.
Since my entryway is adjacent to my living room, I added some decor items to make it feel like a cute part of my home. I added curtains, a standing mirror (perfect for those before-you-leave-the-house self evaluations), and a wreath. Small accents like this can really bring your entryway to the next level. Adding photos on the wall or even a pillow on the bench would also be great decor ideas.
The great thing about having a small entryway is that it does not require many elements to create a practical and pretty space. Any configuration of these 5 elements will give you everything you need to solve all your small entryway problems!
