Simple Homemaking Tips
1. Do Dishes Daily
Cooking every night is a wonderful way to show your love. However, it’s also a wonderful way to make a mess! Making sure to do the dishes in their entirety is an important step in your day. This will make your kitchen feel fresh, clean, and ready for another round of delicious food! When I first became a homemaker, I would let the dishes build up for days. This resulted in me feeling like I did not want to cook, as not to add to the mess. Once I began to wash the dishes daily, I felt motivated and excited to cook every night. It is a small action that will have a large impact.
2. Run & Empty the Dishwasher Daily
If you have a dishwasher, I have found that running it daily is essential for the tidiness of my kitchen. Even though it is just my husband and I, we manage to fill our small dishwasher daily. With all of my cooking, it just makes sense for our household. Not only does the dishwasher need to be run, but it needs to be emptied, too! This will allow your cabinets to always be stocked, avoiding the frustration of not having the dishes you need.
3. Make Your Bed
I know.. basic! But this single household tip has made a true difference in my day. When you walk into a room with a made bed, it looks so neat and fresh (not to mention how wonderful it feels to crawl into a nicely made bed at the end of the day). It’s all about doing little things each day to prepare for your future self. Making your bed shows a true intention to start and end the day off right.
4. Let In Fresh Air
Being a New England Girlie, I know this can be hard to do for most of the year with the cooler temperatures. But even one minute of cracking a window can do wonders for your home’s air quality. My favorite time of the year to open my patio door is in the fall, when the air is crisp. Having fresh air circulate in your home makes everything feel lighter. Incorporating elements of nature into my home always boosts my mood, and reminds me how lucky I am to live in a place where the air is always fresh.
5. Pay Attention to the Little Things
What are the “little things” might you ask? They are any small task or object that takes minimal time to put away, clean, or move. It can be a rogue reusable grocery bag hanging around the kitchen, a pair of earrings left on the kitchen counter, a set of playing cards left on the table, or an empty water bottle in your entryway. (Yes, these are all things currently askew in my home). Taking care of these so called “little things” only take a matter of minutes, and can tidy up multiple areas of your home. Having multiple items left out creates the illusion of clutter and uncleanliness, so taking those few minutes to tend to them will help your homemaking process in the long run.
6. Prepare for dinner
In my home, my husband and I reconnect over dinner. It is the time when we get to talk about our days. With such importance being placed on this one meal, making sure to have everything prepped and ready to go is important for a smooth cooking process. Things like setting the table, pre-measuring herbs, pre-chopping/cooking vegetables, and pre-cutting/trimming/cooking chicken can save time and hassle in the moment of cooking dinner. It can lead to a much more enjoyable experience, and takes some of the stress out of getting supper on the table, allowing you to better appreciate actually eating dinner. Preparing your food ahead of cooking dinner allows you to clean up that first round of dishes, which means less of a mess after you eat dinner!
7. Chose one load of laundry per day
Towels, linens, clothes, jackets… the list could go on. Dirty laundry can build up far faster than it is washed, so intentionally running a load a day will help you stay on top of it. It will eventually become a natural part of your routine. Don’t forget to complete it from start to finish; wash, dry, and fold/put away. Having laundry under control is a feeling of accomplishment, and will aid in keeping your home neat and tidy!
Even if you are a seasoned homemaker, these tips can remind you that when it comes to your home, small tasks have large impacts!
