What Is A Homemaking Routine & Rhythm?
Before we get into how to create a homemaking routine and rhythm, it’s important to know what each is, and how they differ from each other!
A homemaking routine is a set schedule that guides each day, and determines when we do certain things. Homemaking rhythm is more abstract, and is the way we go about doing our routine.
Having a homemaking routine is important to productivity as homemakers, and rhythm is important to finding joy in homemaking. Being a homemaker requires completing a lot of repetitive tasks, but finding a rhythm helps to add interest into each.
Homemaking Routines: Written In Stone?
During different phases in your homemaking life, you will need different routines. As life is ever-changing, so should your homemaking routine. A routine that worked for you at one time may not work for you a couple of years down the road, and there is nothing wrong with that!
The 3 Steps
1. Determine Daily Tasks
The first step to creating your homemaking routine and rhythm is to determine the tasks you do everyday. Things like dishes, cooking, laundry, and cleaning are examples of daily tasks/activities you might want to include. Writing all of these tasks down will give you a visual of your responsibilities, and can help you organize the tasks in a way that works for you. Don’t forget to add leisure activities in your routine as well, such as reading, working out, drinking coffee, etc. Adding in things you enjoy will provide you with needed breaks, and will refresh you before starting on another homemaking task.
2. Experiment With Different Routines
Finding a routine that works for you won’t happen in one day; it will take months of trying different schedules until you find one that you connect with. Choosing to put certain tasks in the morning and certain tasks in the afternoon could be one way of doing this, and can help create a better flow to your routine. This will create two separate daily routines, which might break up your tasks nicely in order to avoid feeling overwhelmed. If you want to see an example of this, read my posts, The Homemaker’s Morning Routine, and The Homemaker’s Afternoon Routine. Splitting up your day based on different tasks can create a routine that is both organized and enjoyable.
Experimenting with different routines will help you discover what you want in your daily homemaking routine, and what you don’t want. When doing this, be sure to test each routine for at least a week, so that you get a true feel for it before going on to trying another one. Routines can slightly differ from day to day depending on other homemaking obligations, so sticking with one long enough to get a feel for it will help you determine if it works for you or not!
After you have tested multiple routine options, you can choose the one you like the best, or combine a couple to create the ultimate routine! Once you create the routine you like the most, fine-tune it until it fits perfectly into your preferences and priorities!
3. Find Your Rhythm
Once you have found your homemaking routine (yay) you can now start to find your homemaking rhythm. As some homemaking tasks are not inherently exciting, we can make them more enjoyable with our homemaking rhythm. How we complete certain tasks and the way we flow from one thing to another is all part of our homemaking rhythm. Maybe when you prep dinner you drink a glass of iced tea and listen to music. Maybe when you fold laundry you put your favorite show on. Adding special things like this to our routines helps us to find our homemaking rhythm, and helps us add splashes of happiness into our days.
With these three steps, you should be able to find a homemaking routine and rhythm that fits into your day. Remember that no routine is set in stone, and you can change it as much as you want until you’re happy with it!
