Home Organization
When it comes to small spaces, home organization can be a serious brain teaser. Luckily, there are so many creative home organization solutions, especially for small spaces! Having a disorganized space is overwhelming, but you’ll be happy to know that it does not take extensive organization systems to make a difference! Using simple products to organize everyday things will give you the best results, and will work long-term. Sometimes the fanciest, most complicated organizational systems become too much to manage, and end up being a hindrance, rather than a help. The ideas in this post are all simple storage/organization solutions for small spaces that you’ll want to keep around for a while.
Budget
Having functional home organization does not mean you have to spend hundreds of dollars. There are plenty of options that can fit into a tight budget. However, when it comes to having an organized home, you might be able to justify spending a little more on something that will make your life easier. This post has some storage solutions that are a little more pricey, as well as some that are under $50.
Repurposing
Remember that just because an organization product isn’t working in one spot in your home doesn’t mean it won’t work in another! Shifting them around until you find its perfect home will allow you to know what products will help you best in the future without wasting any current products! The other side of repurposing is using items that weren’t necessarily meant for home organization as ways to organize certain things. Things like empty candle jars and plastic canisters can serve as inexpensive, eco-friendly home organization products.
Before throwing away a potential organization vessel, look at it with a different perspective, and with home organization in mind. I can guarantee that 9 times out of 10, you will find an organizational use for it! Not only does it save you money, but it saves that item from going into a landfill. Your wallet is happy, and so is Mother Nature. Can’t get better than that.
Home Organization: A Never Ending Journey
No matter how small your home, the process of organizing is never truly done. If you do not up-keep your organizational systems, they will fall into disarray and will do more bad than good. Finding storage solutions is one part of the equation, but maintaining is the other, more important part. As you learn what works best for your organizational needs, you will shift things around and purchase different items. The process of organizing your home is not a “one and done” ordeal, and it takes time and patience to find the perfect organization solutions for your specific space.
9 Home Organization Ideas For Small Spaces
These are 9 of the best home organization ideas for small spaces! From organizing pots and pans to having a spot for paperwork, these home organization ideas for small spaces cover it all!
1. Standing Pantry
An organizational MUST in a kitchen with limited storage/organization options. There are so many different pantries with a variety of different styles, colors, and configurations. As standing pantries provide a ton of extra storage, they also provide organization. In my book, storage and organization go hand in hand. Having additional kitchen storage leads to proper organization, because it gives you the necessary room to organize dry goods and small kitchen appliances.
When we moved into our home, I only had one tiny pantry built into a corner, leaving me with 3 awkward, triangular shelves. As you can imagine, this caused an organizational nightmare, so we purchased a standing pantry at Lowe’s. The amount of extra storage it provides is exceptional on its own, but mixing this with the way it allows me to organize small appliances and dry goods make it a MUST-BUY. I promise you it will be worth every penny. My pantry allows me to use the separate shelves as organizational tools. Each shelf has a “theme,” and I always know where needed items are located because of this. The shelving themes are as follows: Household, Baking, Cooking/Grains, Snacks, & Small Appliances/overflow Household. This organizational technique makes a huge difference in my kitchen, and in the way I navigate it.
2. Organizational Bins & Baskets
The perfect organizational tool for smaller things that would otherwise be without a home. Organizational bins are great for the kitchen, and larger baskets are great for closets. Plastic bins in the kitchen serve as multi-purpose organization tools, and can be used to organize panties, fridges, and cupboards. The plastic ones allow you to wash them, which is essential with food storage. Having a home for different food items will provide a functional and organized kitchen that doesn’t get you frustrated every time you need something. Baskets, being a little more decorative, can be used to organize those loose ends in areas like the entryway, and can also be put to good use in closet organization. Both baskets and plastic bins come in so many different sizes, meaning you can fit them into any space!
Recently, I purchased plastic, organizational bins at Sam’s Club, and I have them on the rack in my utility closet. I use them to organize bulk food from Sam’s Club, and they are stackable, which only means more organization options!
3. Rolling Kitchen Island/Cart
Hands-down the best way to maximize a small kitchen. Rolling islands come in a variety of sizes, configurations, and prices, making it easy to choose one that best suits your space. A rolling kitchen island provides you with a significant amount of extra storage, making your kitchen much more organized.
Ideas For Island Organization
In my kitchen, I had limited storage, which forced me to store things in a very disorganized manner. I decided to buy a rolling kitchen island, and am thankful I have it every day. Not only does it provide more storage and organization space, but it provides extra counter space. The organization in my kitchen went to a whole new level when I got this island. As shown in the photo above, the island holds A LOT. I have my pots and pans stored on the open shelving/hooks, as well as pot holders and dish towels.
In addition to this, the glass cabinet holds all of our mugs, and other cookware such as my Dutch oven. To top it all off, it provides me with an extra surface, which I use every single day when baking and cooking. Lastly, the large drawer holds all of our utensils and food wraps/bags. Although a good quality rolling island can be a couple of hundred dollars, it is an organizational life-saver, and I can’t imagine my kitchen without it! Another great thing about a rolling kitchen island is how you don’t need a large kitchen to get one; my kitchen is fairly small, but I still managed to sneak in an island!
The other option for kitchen storage is to get a kitchen cart, which would go more in a corner of your kitchen. It would only serve as storage and organization rather than as a workspace, but it still gets the job done! These tend to be cheaper, and can fit into smaller spaces.
4. Hampers
Having even one hamper can help tremendously when it comes to laundry organization. Leaving dirty clothes strewn all across the floor makes for a disorganized laundry nightmare. Having one or a couple of hampers provides one central location to throw your clothes into at the end of the day, and creates a tidier environment. If you have room, getting a couple hampers can help to organize laundry loads, such as towels, darks, lights, etc. But, if you have limited space (like I do), one hamper will still work wonders.
When it comes to choosing a hamper, take into consideration where it will be placed. If it is in a closet somewhere, it doesn’t really matter if it is pretty or not. However, if you don’t have a closet to store it in and it is in plain sight, consider purchasing something other than an ugly hamper for your clothes. Think outside the hamper with this one; items such as baskets with lids can be used as hampers, and are more aesthetically pleasing than a regular hamper or laundry basket.
In my home, I have utilized a lidded basket as a hamper. We only have a tiny laundry closet in our house, and our bathroom/bedroom does not have a good spot for a hamper. My basket serves as a disguised hamper for my husband’s work attire, which organizes our laundry in a way that allows me to easily assess when I need to do a load of his work clothes. Not only is the basket serving an organizational purpose, but it’s a cute decor item as well!
5. Food Wrap Dispenser
Kind of extra, but definitely a great organizational product! As shown in the photo above, a food wrap dispenser allows you to take the various wraps out of their boxes, and place them in a dispenser with built-in, sliding cutters. This eliminates having multiple boxes of food wrap stacked on top of each other, and takes away the frustration of needing the one on the bottom of the stack. It’s also a space-saver, allowing you to use that spare space for other items.
I purchased this dispenser at Sam’s club, and have it stored in the drawer of my kitchen island. The amount of organization this has brought to my kitchen is so satisfying, and it is a small/inexpensive product that makes a huge difference in my limited space!
6. Food Bag Dispenser
Extremely similar to the food wrap dispenser (and both purchased at Sam’s Club) is the food bag dispenser. This dispenser has multiple slots to store different sized plastic food bags, which means not having to make room for 4 different boxes of bags. Instead, this dispenser organizes them into one area, and makes grabbing bags a lot easier.
I never thought I would be someone to get excited over a bag dispenser, but here we are. Homemaking has changed me. I store this dispenser right next to the food wrap dispenser, and it makes that area feel so accessible and organized.
7. Filing Cabinet/Safe
Some of you may think “where would I store a filing cabinet/safe in my small space?” In all honesty, having one central location for all your paperwork will save space in the long-run, and will organize your paperwork in a helpful way. There are so many different options for safes and filing cabinets. Smaller ones can easily be tucked away in any corner or closet. Having specified folders for different documents will also help to further organize your papers, and you will always know exactly where to look for a certain document!
8. Vanity Organizer
I think most women can agree that no matter how large our bathroom vanity, it would never be large enough. Having a small vanity seems almost impossible to properly organize, and can become frustrating when getting ready. Between hair products, hair tools, hair accessories, make-up, and jewelry, our vanity can quickly become chaotic. Luckily, there are many different styles of vanity organizers to help this problem. Most organizers can fit on a small countertop, and will condense all your beauty accessories into one, organized location.
Depending on the amount/types of products you have, there are different shapes of organizers. There are also organizers for hair tools, which eliminates the messy look of having them all strewn about. All these options make choosing the best one for your space simple, and will immediately organize your vanity. Rather than being frustrated when trying to find a certain product, you will now be able to find it with ease! It will also serve as a decluttering tactic. Once your organizer is overflowing, you know it is time to stop buying and clean it out! (If you’re interested in more decluttering ideas, visit my post, 9 Foolproof Decluttering Ideas to Tidy Up Your Home.) Having all your beauty items organized in one container will free up other, precious counter space!
9. Utensil Organizers
Silverware freely clanking around in a drawer… not ideal. Having utensil organizers provides a secure home for all your silverware. This makes grabbing utensils and putting them away a breeze. Not only does it organize your silverware, but it also protects your drawer from getting scratched up. The nice thing about these organizers is the different size options avaliable, and how affordable they are. Depending on your drawer size and variety of silverware, you can buy one single organizer, or multiple to create an organized configuration inside your drawer.
In my kitchen island, I have one large organizer for all our utensils, and a smaller one for serving utensils and other miscellaneous items. Having these organizers makes it so I know exactly where things are, and keeps them in their respective spots.
Home organization in small spaces can be tricky, but with these 9 ideas, you should be able to create organizational systems that work for you!
