Awkward & Bare Spaces In Your Home
Every home has its quirks, and there is guaranteed to be at least one space in your home that you don’t know how to decorate. Sometimes it’s a corner, other times it’s a shelf or the top of a piece of furniture. Not being able to find the right piece of decor can be frustrating, but between these 15 home decor items, there are sure to be a couple to help your situation!
A Different Perspective
Sometimes, all it takes to find that right piece of decor is to get a fresh perspective. Whether it’s reading a blog such as this one to get ideas, or thinking outside of the box, opening up your options will help you find just what you need! Maybe for the past 6 months you’ve been looking for the right accent piece for a certain corner, when all along you could have just gotten a plant with a stand, or a basket to fill with blankets. The perfect item may not be a “decor item” per say, but more an item of function that can also serve as decor. Using an item you already have can also solve the problem; sometimes the solution is right in front of you, you just have to shift your perspective to see it!
15 Home Decor Items To Help You
Decorate The Undecoratable
I think I made that word up, so here’s a definition. Undecoratable: Adjective. Being extremely difficult to decorate. “I thought this corner in my home was undecoratable until I read A House Full Of Home’s helpful blog post!” Read it and weep, Merriam-Webster.
The point of this post is to provide you with a variety of home decor items you can use in different areas of your home that seem to reject every item. Here are the 15 home decor items to help you decorate the undecoratable!
1. Plants
This is my go-to home decor item for any space. Plants add color, texture, and life to a room, and can be displayed in many different ways. The plant itself is cute enough, but when you pair it with a pretty pot and a unique stand, it elevates it to an eye-catching piece of home decor.
When it comes to plant stands, thinking outside of the box will help to find a stand that is also a point of interest with your decor. Making use of something other than a plant stand to rest your plant on opens up more options for you, such as using an end/side table or a stool. The only thing to keep in mind with this is to make sure your plant does not exceed the weight capacity of whatever you choose!
In the photo above, you can see that I chose an outdoor end table as my plant stand. I liked the color and shape of it, and thought it to be prettier than a plain old plant stand. It is more of a statement than a boring, metal stand. I also paired it with a white cement fluted pot, further adding to the decor element of the plant itself. You could also display plants in a hanging pot from the ceiling or wall, which helps to take up bare and awkward corners and walls. Plants will forever be my go-to for filling in the gaps, and for good reason!
2. Figurines/Decorative Objects
This goes more for shelving and tabletop decor. When it comes to figurines and decorative objects, the options are endless, making it fairly simple to choose something that fits your space! These are perfect home decor items because since they are usually smaller objects, you can opt for more whimsical ones, such as the blue bunny in the photo above. They are small enough to add a splash of interest without taking over, and can easily be moved around or swapped out if you need to freshen up the space in the future.
3. Candles
I know, this is as simple as it gets. BUT, candles are the perfect addition to any tabletop set up, and can really tie a home decor display together. Besides plain old candles, there are more unique options in this category, including sconces and candle sticks. These two items are a little more eye-catching than basic candles. Using candlesticks as tabletop decor is always an elegant home decor item, and can take the place of a plain candle.
Candle sconces are a little different, since they are meant to go on a wall. This home decor item can be the perfect fit for a small area of wall that needs something on it, and is simple yet a statement.
4. Baskets
Perfect for that weird corner in your living room! The nice thing about baskets is they are home decor items that you can actually use. Hiding pillows, blankets, games, and puzzles in a pretty basket brings it from clutter, to cuteness! With all the sizes, colors, shapes, and materials baskets come in, you are sure to find the right one for your space and, more importantly, for your stuff!
5. Electric Fireplace
An electric fireplace adds character, coziness, and is the perfect solution for an empty corner in your home. Plus, what’s better than curling up next to it in a blanket on a fall evening with a cup of tea?
6. Large Vase
Displaying a large vase with faux flowers is a great way to take up vertical wall space. Choosing a neutral colored vase will allow you more options for where to display it, and you can add color to it with the florals you choose. I have had this particular vase and the same “floofies” (as I refer to them) in my last two apartments, and now it is in my house. Vases are an extremely versatile home decor item, and can “‘go” in any space. When choosing a neutral vase, you can always swap out the filling if you get sick of it, or if it no longer matches your current decor.
7. Mirror
Wall mirrors and standing mirrors each fill different spaces. As a wall mirror is restricted to a wall or to resting on the top of a dresser for display, a standing mirror is able to be placed in a corner, or in an area that lacks wall space. Mirrors can make your space look larger, and are specifically useful in entryways and bedrooms.
8. Lamps
Perfect for corners in your living room and for countertops, lamps are a functional home decor item. Using a table lamp as an accent piece in your living room or kitchen will add warmth to the area, and using a standing lamp for a bare corner in your living room will take up vertical space.
The lamp in the photo above is a great example of using a lamp for home decor. The rattan shade adds a unique flare, and the arched arm is more decorative than a straight one. This lamp takes up room in the corner behind the couch, as well as space above the couch.
9. Cutting Board
This one is for that one open space of counter in your kitchen. Kitchens tend to be tough to decorate, because you don’t want to waste precious counter space. Using a cutting board as decor will solve this problem, since it can be both decorative, and useful! There are many sizes, shapes, and styles of cutting boards, and paired with other useful kitchen items, it can make for a functional and cute display!
10. Wreaths
Wreaths made from faux flowers and greenery can provide decor in the weirdest of places. In my entryway, I have a rather… unsightly door. It isn’t horrible, but there’s nothing fancy about it! I wanted to spruce it up a little, but was unsure how. I decided to try a wreath, and it was the perfect fit! My door went from kinda ugly to kinda cute in a matter of minutes!
You can also change out your wreaths for the seasons, or add elements to the same wreath year round that make it more suitable for the seasons.
11. Wall Art/Photos
Sketches, paintings, photography, family portraits… whatever you please! Using wall art and pictures is probably the easiest way to fill bare wall space. You can get creative with this, and can fill a large wall pretty easily with a collage of framed photos. This is also a great way to personalize your home. As photos are the most obvious way to do this, having special, hand drawn pictures in your home can also provide an interesting way to fill wall space.
The drawing in the photo above was done by my great aunt, and was passed down to me by my grandfather. Not only does it fill an awkward piece of wall in my home, but it is a special piece to me that has a story behind it!
12. Accent Furniture
Using small furniture pieces as home decor items is an easy way to take up a large piece of bare space in your home. Whether it be a coffee table, TV stand, end table, dresser, or bench, accent furniture has a way of finishing off a room and tying it all together.
13. Shelving
Shelving opens up so many options! Maybe you want a bookshelf for your living room to display all your beautiful books, or maybe you want a glass wall shelf in your bathroom to store all your pretty face care bottles on. Shelves are heroes when it comes to bare spaces, and can be used alone or in a cluster to take up even more space. Putting up a cute shelf and throwing some decor on it is as easy as it gets, and you can’t go wrong! For help with decorating a bathroom shelf, read my post, “Useful & Pretty Bathroom Shelf Decor: 3 Elements You Need“.
14. Accent Chair
Perfect for bedrooms and living spaces, an accent chair can fill that one gap, and can turn it into a cozy reading space! Chairs have a way of effortlessly looking like they belong, and can transform any bare space into an inviting place to relax.
15. Faux Tree
You absolutely cannot go wrong with a faux tree. It “goes” in any room in the house, and can hide unsightly things, like electrical panels. This home decor item is timeless, and can take up bare, vertical space. It provides a beautiful accent in any room!
These 15 stylish home decor items give you a variety of ideas that will fill any bare floor, wall, and/or tabletop space! Hopefully at least one of these suggestions helps you to finally decorate the undecoratable in your home.
